Griffith’s Valuation – County Armagh

The Primary Valuation (also known as Griffith’s Valuation) was published between 1847 and 1864. There is a printed valuation book for each barony or poor law union in the country showing the names of occupiers of land and buildings, the names of persons from whom these were leased and the amount and value of the property held. – Fáilte Romhat

By: Matthew Charles Callan III, Born 10/15/1947
My Great Grandfather’ name was Matthew Charles Callan, he came from Ireland to the United States in the late 1800’s and was married to a German Lady. His brother came out about the same time, I believe that his name was Thomas or Tom. They settled in the town of Colma in California, just South of San Francisco. My Great Grandfather became the largest dairy farmer in the area and his brother became the largest pig farmer. My Great Grandfather built a three story Victorian home on a hill over looking the Dairy. I went to school on the site of the dairy to Colma Middle School. I could look up over the school and see the old home. My Grandfather and father were both born there. It was torn down a few years ago to build new homes. The family of his brother has a very large Real Estate Business in the local area to this day called Callan Realty. I have photos of my Grandfather , but none of my Great Grandfather or Great Grandmother. My Great Grand parents had 5 children, Harold, Noney, Matthew, Edna and one other lady that I met before she passed with cancer.
You can still find articles on them from old copies of the San Mateo news paper.

Very interesting. Have you thought of having a YDNA test with familytreeDNA? A simple test would help place which group of Callans you are descended and probably your county of origin in the old country. I understand your family came from County Longford, Ireland.

If you have more questions about YDNA testing please let me know. YDNA traces the pure male line, son to father to father so is very important in genealogy. I have YDNA kits that I can send out from here at home and I can send you a link on-line so you can make your payment directly to the company.

There is a Callan DNA Project hosted by familytreeDNA.
